Naval Health Service. Past and Present

Jorge Garín Jiménez and Carlos Tromben Reyes (co-authors). Viña del Mar, Imprenta ORGRAF Impresores, 1999.

«… The Naval Hospital “Almirante Nef” has been the scene of numerous milestones in the history of Chilean and Latin-American medicine: In 1931, Chile’s the first arteriography was carried out, and in 1943 surgical trials of high blood pressure with extracorporeal circulation were carried out. Twenty-five years later, Dr. Jorge Kaplan, with a team of naval surgeons, performed the first cardiac transplant in Chile on patient María Elena Peñaloza. This historic event took place on 28 June 1968, just six months after Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the first of such operations in South Africa.”
