Valparaíso, the Navy and the Merchant Marine

Fernando Vergara (Editor) Tribute to Valparaíso. Ediciones Universitarias de Valparaíso. Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. 2007.

“Through this two-century synthesis, we have seen how the Navy has concentrated in Valparaiso the establishment of its high command institutions, with the highest being the Office of the Commander-in-Chief located at the center of the city’s naval and maritime life, in a duly restored beautiful building dating from the early twentieth century. It has also continued carrying out its educational activities, as well as managing its support to the Merchant Marine in this factual maritime capital of Chile, which has also been from the outset the base port of the Fleet created in 1817. This whole process has taken place right before  the eyes of the population, which has witnessed it from the privileged watchtower provided by the amphitheater configuration of its hills and whose lives are linked, in some way, to this naval and maritime work.”
