Naval engineering, a century old speciality

Valparaíso, Imprenta de la Armada, 1989.

“What is now known as Naval Engineering is the long evolution of several specialties and even trades typical of the sailing era, through more than fifty years of the history of the Chilean Navy. That’s why it’s not easy to set a starting date. If only the history of mechanical engineers were to be told, the arrival of the first steam-powered vessel, or the issuance of the first professional regulation, or even the creation of the first school, could be considered as the starting date. But what we know today as Naval Engineering is a much broader family to which mechanical and electrical engineers have been incorporated. From these two major professional categories, those who have taken specific courses have become naval architects; submarine and aviation engineers; metallurgists and aeronautical; administrators and IT, as well as nuclear engineers and economists. In other words, a large number of specialties in the complex world of a modern Navy.”
